| On April 18, 2008, the men and women of First Student in Rochester,
New Hampshire, responsible for safely transporting school children
in the areas of Rochester, Portsmouth, Somersworth, Rollinsford,
and Acton, Maine, voted convincingly to join Teamsters Local 633.
Principal
Officer David W. Laughton stated, “The Union movement
within First Student is alive and well in New Hampshire, and we
have a lot left to do. In fact, we have another election
for the Plaistow, New Hampshire facility in a few short weeks,
and we intend to continue to work to improve the lives of these
hardworking men and women.”
After a blistering negative campaign from the local managers,
the members stood together and defied the open apathy that the
Company displayed.
Roger
Travers, Organizer for Teamsters Joint Council 10 said, “This
is one the hardest fought campaigns we have had with First Student. I
am proud of the Organizing Committee and the job they did in holding
it all together. These new Teamsters are anxious to get to
the bargaining table and start reaping the benefits of their new
found strength.”
Contract
proposals are currently being scheduled under the direction of
Local 633. Said David Laughton, “ These people have
endured treatment that most people could not imagine. It
is our goal to raise the public’s awareness that the people
who are responsible for transporting our most sacred cargo, our
children, are in dire need of improvement of their working conditions
and the Teamsters will help with that - one election at a time.”
